Dr. Hichem Guergouri

Researcher in Astrophysics, Cosmology and Scientific Mediation

I am a permanent researcher at the Research Unit in Scientific Mediation and Culture – CERIST, Algeria. My current interests include cosmology, astronomy, astronomical transients, citizen science and science outreach. I am also involved in educational and public astronomy projects, including planetarium activities, science communication and international collaborations.

Profile

My academic background is in theoretical physics, with a PhD focused on particle dynamics in relativistic frameworks. My current scientific direction is centered on cosmology, astronomy, astronomical transients and public engagement with science.

Current Roles

Maitre de Recherche A - CERIST.
Head of Fundamental Sciences and Universe Division.
Active contributor to astronomy education and public outreach in Algeria.

Research Lines

Current scientific themes and collaborations.

Cosmology

Cosmology

My research in cosmology explores the fundamental properties and evolution of the Universe, with particular emphasis on cosmological models, dark energy, and the large-scale dynamics of cosmic expansion.

Current work includes developing alternative observational probes of cosmological parameters through relativistic astrophysical phenomena, as well as investigating primordial curvature perturbations and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observables within nonlinear extensions of General Relativity.

VASCO Project

VASCO Project

My work within the Vanishing and Appearing Sources during a Century of Observations (VASCO) project focuses on the analysis of archival astronomical surveys to investigate transient phenomena, disappearing sources, and unusual optical events recorded before the satellite era.

Current research includes the statistical study of transient populations in historical sky surveys, the identification of aligned multiple-transient events, and the development of observational tests to distinguish astrophysical, instrumental, and artificial-origin explanations for rare transient phenomena in archival data.

Astronomy

Astronomy

My interests in astronomy span a wide range of observational topics, including solar observations, planetary occultations, variable stars, transient phenomena, and general sky monitoring. I actively participate in observational campaigns and educational astronomy initiatives aimed at promoting practical astronomical research and data analysis.

I use a variety of astronomical instruments and observational techniques to study celestial phenomena, contributing to data collection, public outreach, and citizen-science projects while developing expertise in observational methods across different fields of astronomy.

Science Communication and Outreach

Promoting astronomy, scientific culture and public engagement through education, outreach initiatives and innovative communication projects.

World Space Week Algeria

World Space Week Algeria

As National Coordinator for World Space Week in Algeria, I help organize and promote educational activities celebrating space science and technology. These events bring together students, educators, researchers and the public through lectures, observations, workshops and outreach campaigns.

This international initiative contributes to strengthening public awareness of space science while encouraging young people to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Echiheb Elmi Magazine

Echiheb Elmi Magazine

I founded and designed Echiheb Elmi Magazine as a platform dedicated to the dissemination of scientific knowledge in Arabic. Through the magazine, I contribute to the writing, editing and presentation of articles covering astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology and a wide range of scientific topics.

The project aims to make scientific concepts accessible to a broad audience while promoting scientific culture, critical thinking and public engagement with science. As both editor and designer, I oversee the magazine's visual identity and content development, helping bridge the gap between scientific research and the public.

Planetarium

Affordable Planetarium Development

One of my outreach projects focuses on the development of an affordable, low-cost digital planetarium designed to make immersive astronomy education accessible to a wider audience. The project explores practical and innovative solutions for creating planetarium experiences using accessible technologies and locally available resources.

In addition to the technical development of the system, I design and produce educational content covering astronomy, space science and celestial phenomena. The goal is to provide engaging learning experiences for students, educators and the general public while reducing the financial barriers associated with traditional planetarium installations.

Science Outreach

Science Outreach and Education

Science communication has been a central component of my activities for many years. Through public lectures, astronomy events, workshops, media appearances and educational programs, I aim to make science accessible and engaging for diverse audiences.

My outreach work includes collaborations with schools, scientific associations, cultural institutions and international initiatives dedicated to promoting scientific literacy and fostering interest in astronomy, astrophysics and space sciences.
